CALL
CALL (Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning) is a formative 360° evaluation tool that surveys the empirically relevant tasks of leadership across a school organization and provides powerful, targeted data to school leaders and leadership teams with customized feedback and action planning tools. The CALL assessment is based on over twenty years of research that identifies which tasks actually result in improved teaching and learning outcomes, rubrics that summarize this research, and the ‘Learning 1st’ framework for guiding action at the school level.
CALL is an online tool that can be administered online or on mobile iOS devices and can be completed in a staff meeting time. Each respondent is asked to review 21 sub-domains or tasks of leadership. Collectively, leaders can quickly see both numerical measures of leadership tasks, or review ‘next steps’ feedbacks that suggest areas of grown in each sub-domain.
Domains of Leadership Practice for Learning
CALL captures current leadership practices in five domains that accurately assess leadership towards effective teaching and learning outcomes.
DOMAIN 1: Focus on Learning: School leaders maintain a school wide focus on learning, are recognized as instructional leaders, collaboratively design integrated learning plans, and provide appropriate services for students who traditionally struggle.
DOMAIN 2: Monitoring Teaching and Learning: School leaders effectively leverage formative and summative tools for evaluating student learning and teaching.
DOMAIN 3: Building Nested Learning Communities: School leaders foster a collaborative school-wide focus on improved teaching and learning, professional development, socially distributed leadership, and effective coaching and mentoring.
DOMAIN 4: Acquiring and Allocating Resources: School leaders effectively manage personnel, time, material resources, external and internal expertise, and community and family resources towards teaching and learning outcomes.
DOMAIN 5: Maintaining a Safe and Effective Learning Environment: School leaders maintain clear, consistent, and enforced expectations for student behavior, safe and clean learning environments, and buffer the teaching environment for learning.
About the Assessment
The CALL survey serves school leaders with locally relevant data gathered from the principal, school staff, and teachers. CALL measures leadership tasks distributed across school settings. Currently in development, this collective 360° data provides the most complete set of data available surrounding the tasks of leadership that can be successfully addressed across a school setting by any number of formal and informal leaders. In addition, CALL integrates the ‘Learning 1st Framework’ for school improvement directly into the feedback resources so your school data is directly linked to resources, suggestions, and models of effective practice
Content Validity
CALL Project Leads have received a major grant to gauge and improve the validity of the CALL survey. Survey developers established the content validity of the CALL survey by using their expert knowledge of the domains of leadership for learning, as well as by using an advisory panel of practitioners in the field to ensure that the items measure the requisite dimensions of leadership for learning (see Blitz & Clifford, 2010). Under the grant, construct validity, predictive validity, and reliability will be assessed with data from a large sample of teachers and school leaders spread across the country. A key goal in these efforts will be to understand the relationship between dimensions of leadership measured by CALL and value-added student achievement.
Getting Started
CALL is easy to use. Registration for the instrument requires a few minutes and list of staff to take the survey. In addition to an information packet for you to use, CALL automates the invitation, login, and feedback tools for you to oversee implementation. Once registered, principals simply set a window for staff to take the survey and return for feedback when it closes.
Using the Feedback
The CALL online feedback system provides school-wide results on each item of the survey along with suggestions for targeting areas of growth, tools, ideas, and even links to other principals that have had success in specific domains of practice. In addition to collecting clear, effective data, CALL helps you maximize the impact. Once you have implemented CALL, you can return to compare measures, distribute customized reports for specific groups, and track changes over time.
